What’s in a Keyword?

by Davanti Digital on May 25, 2012

A keyword is a word or group of words, also called a keyphrase, generally no longer than three to four words per set. How do keywords work? Think about the internet like a document scanner. Websites are the documents and the algorithm of a search engine is the scanner. The algorithm scans the internet for the most relevant results according to your search.

What is considered relevant? The search engine will pick up sites that contain true information on the search term you entered. For instance, if you enter “Digital Marketing in New Jersey,” you will get those websites that contain the most true information and keywords centered on Digital Marketing in New Jersey. The search engine’s algorithm does have the ability to find and disregard spam information, which is why we say true information.

How would a website be marked as spam, or disregarded in a search? A search engine would pick up a website as spam, or not pick it up at all, if there are links within the site that lead to spam content or software. A website can be disregarded in a search result if there are an abundance of keywords, keyphrases and hyperlinks located in the text of the website.

Keyword Stuffing is the term used to describe a website is packed with keywords either in the Meta Tags of the website or in the content. This process was once thought to drive better Search Engine Optimization, but is now considered useless as search engines such as Google no longer recognize these sites.

What is the appropriate amount of keywords to use in a website? According to our SEO specialist, when listing your website’s keyword description, or Meta Tags, it is not advised to use more than 12 to 15 keywords. In a single page of website content, it is not advised to use more than 3 to 5 keywords or phrases.

Search Engine Optimization techniques do work when implemented properly.
